Authorities in Guinea confirmed four cases of the deadly Ebola virus in the capital, Conakry on Thursday. West African nations are calling the virus a serious threat to regional security. At least 63 people have died from the disease so far.
Today I leave the town of Labe in the High Guinea region and move on to the capital of Guinea: Conakry. I'm expecting Conakry to be a bit of a challenge. At least six people have been killed in Guinea's capital, Conakry, during protests sparked by a teacher's strike. Students have called on teachers to end their three week-long strike over pay, so they can return to class. There have also been reports of looting and arrests of journalists. It is the capital of the Western Highlands Province and is located in the large fertile Wahgi Valley in central mainland Papua New Guinea, at an elevation of 1,677 m (5,502 ft). The Highlands Highway is the main arterial route to connect Mount Hagen with the coastal cities of Lae and Madang. The city is named after the old eroded volcano Mount Hagen, located about 24 kilometres (15 mi) to the north-west. The highly-contagious ebola virus has spread to the capital of Guinea. One person had died and another four are in quarantine in Conakry. Since the start of the year, more than 60 people in rural areas have been killed by the disease. Al Jazeera's Erica Wood reports.
